Case Study: Masterton Trust Lands Trust (MTLT)

Masterton Trust Lands Trust (MTLT) is a community-owned charitable trust dedicated to reinvesting in the people and places that make the Wairarapa so special.

HOWIE had the privilege of working alongside MTLT to create a series of video stories that showcase the awesome people and organisations in the not-for-profit space. Our team loves bringing our expertise to teams like MTLT who are committed to strengthening and supporting local communities!

The Project Brief

MTLT backs a wide range of community organisations, from the arts to sustainability and farming.

The goal? To show the real impact of that support: how funding helps these groups keep doing the vital work that strengthens the Masterton community.

Critically, the Trust didn’t want to talk about themselves so much, rather they wanted to champion the organisations while still communicating to stakeholders that they support them. We also wanted each video to have a different feel, to reflect each organisations own style, and provide something the organisation could use in their own promotional material and storytelling.

MTLT provides the funding but the organisations do the hands-on work. Our team worked with MTLT and the organisations to show the impact of the funding while focusing on the important work these organisations are doing.

HOWIE embraced the challenge, and we love getting over the hill to work in the Wairarapa!

The Process

Working closely with MTLT, we shaped a clear, consistent narrative that highlighted the importance of funding while keeping each organisation’s voice front and centre. Then over a series of scheduled days, we captured authentic, on-the-ground stories.

A special shout out to the team at MTLT, led by Andrew Croskery, and Rachael Dell for being the project’s superstar Producer!

What we delivered

Three high-quality videos for their website and presentations, each showcasing a different organisation MTLT supports. We also delivered versions optimised for social media. Together, these stories demonstrate the dynamism and wide scope of MTLT’s impact and the power of funding in action.

“The brief for my client, Masterton Trust Lands Trust, was to create several short films to showcase a few of the Trust’s grant recipients – focusing on the ‘community good’ each organisation brings to Masterton.
Shot across multiple locations over two days, we went from mustering sheep on a school farm, to filming an international art exhibition, to rescuing food from supermarkets. Everything ran smoothly and to schedule. Tareq is a great problem solver, knows his craft, and puts everyone at ease.

A natural with people, Tareq’s comms background was a real asset. His visual story-telling experience is finely tuned and he knew how to get the most from every shot. His insightful questions on the day helped to produce three outstanding films that exceeded expectations.

Liam was super responsive, and patient with editing. The opportunities to feedback were just right. Attention to detail, and going above and beyond to produce not only long-form stories but a selection of short and snappy clips for social channels was the icing on the cake.
Looking forward to working on the next film story. Stellar result, highly recommend Howie.”
